Fear of Water: How does one get 'a head' of having water over their head?

I have the exact same fear so I will be watching for answers!!! I'm ok swimming as long as I know I can put my feet down and still have my head out of water. I can dip under for a second as long as I am holding my nose! Pathetic I know!
